The Dreams Of The Younger You Are Valid

As I look at this photo, I look back at this 10 year old girl whom, though she looks unkept and dishevelled (lol, thank God for growth ay), I am reminded of her innocence, her focus and most importantly, her dreams; the confidence she had in herself to be great; and her desire to soar to heights she could only dream of. 18 years later and I have started to catch glimpses of myself in this girl again.

Life has a way of tossing us about and making us feel inadequate. Of suppressing our dreams & haunting us with mediocrity.

Today I would like to encourage you – if only but one person – that as Lupita Nyongo so eloquently put ityour dreams are valid.

Fast, pray and fight for the little girl or boy in you who wanted to be somebody. After all, God calls us to live a life of greatness.

Ellen G. White too says “Dear youth, what is the aim and purpose of your life?.. Have you thoughts that you dare not express that you may one day stand upon the summit of intellectual greatness…? There is nothing wrong in these aspirations. You may every one of you make your mark. You should be content with no mean attainments. Aim high, and spare no pains to reach the standard.” | Messages to Young People, pg. 36

Go on, dream on, be strong and live a life of greatness. And make the younger you proud.

B.I.G. Forevah

I’m not referring to Christopher ‘Notorius B.I.G.’ Wallace. Nope, this is no ode to him.

This is an ode to sisterhood, specifically that which I share with my big sister, Sonia Dee, AKA Noneni (thanks to my little bro).

She is turning the big 3-0 tomorrow and thought it only right to show love. I think too often, sisterhood is undermined. I have been fortunate to have my blood sister as one of my closest friends. It hasn’t always been this way – we used to fight the heck. But one thing always remained constant. No matter how much we fought, I admired her. She could do no wrong in my eyes and I used to brag to all my friends about how cool my big sister was. Obviously, we’re grown and do correct one another where the need is, but my admiration for her has only grown stronger.

Over the course of time, we went our separate ways – me to boarding school and then to different varsities. 2011 saw us coming back together when I moved to Johannesburg and ours is a relationship that has developed and strengthened over time. It hasn’t always been easy, but I salute you today Sonie AKA my B.I.G. These are but a few reasons why I love you girlaaaah 🙂
